Biography

Three decades in reproductive medicine

Dr. Prof. (Col) Pankaj Talwar, VSM, MD, PhD is an alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, and was formerly Director and Head of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and IVF Services at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi. Over a career spanning three decades, he has performed more than 17,000 IVF cycles while maintaining a clinical pregnancy rate above 60%.

He is credited with conducting India’s first live hands-on workshops in sperm function testing, time-lapse imaging and ovarian cortex vitrification, and has led the establishment of 32 ART centres across India and abroad — including at Army Hospital (R&R) New Delhi, INHS Asvini Mumbai, CMH Dhaka in Bangladesh, and 18 units of Birla Fertility & IVF. He currently serves as an external expert for ART committees at AIIMS Nagpur, Deoghar, Guwahati, Patna, Bhopal and Gorakhpur.

His special interests include recurrent IVF and implantation failure, male-factor infertility, sperm function testing, ovarian tissue cryopreservation, and fertility preservation protocols for cancer patients developed alongside oncology teams. He is Editor-in-Chief of the first video atlas of ART, and his book Frozen Life was among the first in the world dedicated to human cryobiology. He served as President of the Indian Fertility Society (2024–2026) and is Founder Secretary General of the Fertility Preservation Society of India.
